The Story: Pity the poor Banks nannies. Adorable Jane and Michael Banks have chased away a half-dozen governesses, and number seven threw in the chapeau after the children ditched her at the park. The two are just bored, and they implore their ever-serious father to find them a nanny with a sense of fun. Mr. Banks zeroes in on finding a disciplinarian. But, surprise! In floats Mary Poppins. With a carpetbag, some magic, and a little bit of attitude, Mary upends the Banks household, and is determined to set it right.

DVD Special Features: The 2009 edition features several behind-the-scenes looks at Mary Poppins' arrival on Broadway. Of particular fun to kids are the Poppins pop-up facts, a sing-a-long feature (to watch separately or while in the film) and a bonus animated short hosted by Mary herself, Julie Andrews. The two-disc set also includes a deleted song titled "Chimpanzoo" plus making-of and special effects featurettes, art galleries and more.

Trivia & Fun: Neither Karen Dotrice nor Matthew Garber knew it was Dick Van Dyke under all that makeup playing Mr. Dawes. "That's why we looked so terrified," said Dotrice in 2005. The two didn't learn the truth until the credits rolled during the film's royal premiere.

Baby teeth created a logistical nightmare for continuity during the candy-apple scene. Says Dotrice, "We lost two or three teeth during that sequence. They kept having to make us these chicklet teeth."
