# 3 of 5: Being married to a politician
Like Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama admits being married to a politician is not always easy. During his 2000 congressional campaign, she says "there was a lot of tension and stress" -- to such a degree that she told Barack, "I never thought I'd have to raise a family alone." Michelle says the family overcame the issues when she realized "that I needed to focus on what kept myself sane instead of looking to Barack to give me the answers and to help fulfill me. ... I need support. It doesn't always have to come from him." Michelle says she's learned to also lean on her mom and close friends for support.
