Cozy Cone Motel

Fashioned after Sally Carrera's Cozy Cone Motel in Radiator Springs, this distinctive motor lodge provides comfortable accommodations for all those toy cars that go the extra mile. The units, equipped with door awnings, television antennae, and sandpaper driveways, are a cinch to construct -- so your young proprietor will be in business in no time.

For each motel unit, you'll need:

  • Orange safety cone (look for them in the sporting goods aisle at large department stores)*
  • Cozy Cone Motel template
  • Scissors
  • Sticky-back craft foam, black and white
  • White craft paint
  • Small paintbrush
  • Orange permanent marker
  • Two 2 3/4-inch lengths of white pipe cleaner
  • Craft knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Silver pipe cleaner
  • Glue dots
  • Sandpaper

* Note: The safety cones shown here measure about 9 inches tall. If you get the collapsible type with vertical slits in the plastic, simply insert one cone inside another and rotate one of them enough to close the gaps.

Instructions:

1. Print the template and use the pieces as patterns to cut shapes from the specified colors of craft foam.

2. Paint crisscross trim on the door and side windows. Then set the windows aside while the paint dries.

Step 2

3. Meanwhile, use the orange marker to draw stripes on one of the awning pieces.

4. Peel the backing from the second awning piece and press the pipe cleaner lengths onto the sticky side of the foam, as shown. Next, remove the backing from the striped piece and press the two foam pieces together, sticky sides facing, so that the pipe cleaners are sandwiched between them.

Step 4

5. Bend the awning so that it is slightly arched.

Step 5

6. Stick the foam door to the front of the cone.

7. Use the craft knife to score the center of the awning tab, cutting through the backing but not all the way through the foam, as shown (a parent's job).

Step 7

8. Remove the backing and stick one half of the tab to the underside of the awning. Use the other half of the tab to stick the awning to the cone just above the door.

Step 8

9. Stick the door and side windows in place.

10. Bend one end of the silver pipe cleaner, as shown, to resemble a television antenna. Coil the opposite end and use a glue dot to stick it to the top of the cone.

Step 10

11. For the finishing touch, cut out a sandpaper driveway and attach one end to the base of the cone.
