Pirate's Treasure Chest

Pirate Treasure Chest

This decorative box is perfect to stash party favors, gold foil-wrapped chocolate coins, or other pirate-themed trinkets in. Then you can use it as a prop for the Pirate Loot Treasure Hunt. The chest itself is a fun and surprisingly easy project for the party kid to help craft. To make one, you can pick up an inexpensive wooden box at the craft store (the one shown here measures about 9 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches and is about 5 1/2 inches high). Or, if you happen to have a cardboard shoebox on hand, you can use that instead.

You'll need:

  • Hinged wooden box (sold at craft supply stores)
  • Sponge
  • Craft paint (paints with a metallic finish work especially well for this project)
  • Tape measure
  • Decorative scrapbook paper
  • Removable glue dots (optional)
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush
  • Decorative pendant and charms (look in the jewelry or scrapbook aisle of the craft supply store)
  • Tacky glue
  • Adhesive-back felt
Instructions:
1. Paint the box using the sponge to dab paint onto the wood rather than spreading it. This will create a more antique looking finish. Step 1
2. While the paint dries (it won't take long), cut pieces of scrapbook paper to decorate the box with. A fun and easy technique is to create panels to fit each surface, leaving a border of wood around and between them, as shown. You can even layer panels. If you want to try out your design before adhering it, use removable glue dots to temporarily hold the pieces in place. Step 2

3. Attach the paper pieces to the box using Mod Podge applied with a foam brush. Then seal the surface of the box with an additional coat of Mod Podge and let it dry.

4. For the finishing ornamental touch, glue the decorative pendant and charms onto the box.

5. Finally, attach a piece of adhesive-back felt to the underside of box.
