Lumiere the Candlestick Costume

Lumiere Costume

This is a humanized version of Lumiere the Candlestick from Beauty and the Beast.

Prep Time: Approximately 1 week

You'll Need:

  • Thin cardboard (we used pizza boxes)
  • Black jogging/sweat suit
  • Gold acrylic or fabric paint
  • Masking tape
  • Gold fabric (we used a tablecloth to make it cheaper)
  • White felt or fabric
  • Gold trim or lace
  • 3 small fabric flame tiki torches (battery operated)
  • Hot glue
  • Sewing machine

Costume Instructions:

  1. Start with the jogging suit. Masking tape strips lengthwise on the legs of the pants and the sleeves of the shirt. Follow the seams for the best design outcome. Once taped, paint between the lines with the gold fabric paint. Use a sponge brush to dab on the paint little by little. The more coats, the bolder the gold stripes will be. Once dry you can peel off the tape and you should have striped pants and sleeves.
  2. Make patterns for the wax arm pieces and head piece. This pattern will serve multiple purposes; the first being the cardboard frame underneath it, and the second being your sewing patterns for making "slip covers" to put over the cardboard. Remember, the basic shape here is going to be a cylinder with a top and a hollow bottom.
  3. Measure the head of the person that will be wearing the costume. This will be your best guide for the headpiece. The two candles for each hand can be made slightly larger, but shorter than the headpiece. Score flat cardboard to easily "roll" it into a cylinder shape. Once you have made the three cylinders (two of equal height for the hands and one taller for the head), be creative and make some wax drips out of fabric that can be glued on. Holes should be left in the top of each piece big enough to slide your mini fabric flame tiki torches into. The handle of the tiki torches goes down through giving the person wearing the costume a way to hold the hand pieces. *Note the torches have artificial fabric flames -- these can be found at party stores or online. There was really no rhyme or reason to this step -- it was a complex process of what worked, and what didn't. But if you are persistent (and creative!), you will have an amazing end result.
  4. Use gold fabric (or tablecloth) to make seam covers (where paint lines may have not been so crisp) at bottom of pants, waist, etc. Add gold lace or roping around collar and on sleeves. Add gold trim to the bottom portion of the candles for the hands.
  5. Make (or buy) gold booties or spray paint shoes for the feet.
