Here's My Great Green Idea!
In our neighborhood, word got out that at our house, "the mom could fix a bike". Kids were giving me really broken bikes that really couldn't be fixed. So, if the kid could get a permission slip from their parent, the kids could take apart bikes at my garage. Then we started making bikes out of the salvagable parts. Here is a picture of Peter L. with the first Trashmonster bike created! A very proud moment! To date, in eight years, 89 Trashmonster bikes have been given a second life. Several hundred have been saved from the landfill. The unused steel scrap we take to the steel yard. That is an adventure in itself. The kids over the years (probably over 100 kids) have learned to reuse, recycle and CYCLE! They have also gained knowlege of tools, great respect for themselves and others. They have learned how to fix their own bikes and teach others. They have also learned bike safety, encouraged to wear helmets. And the only cost was time and tools.
