The Great Green Challenge

Here's My Great Green Idea!

On January 1st, 2008 our family started a year long project called "The Waste Diet". Our goal is to go the entire year producing as minimal landfill waste as possible and doing it without going to extremes. We've been researching our project and weighing our trash since October of last year and have just completed our first quarter. By changing our shopping habits, getting serious about recycling and composting in the backyard, we've been able to cut our monthly waste from 160 lbs to only 25 lbs. We created a website called www.thewastediet.com to track our progress and to encourage others to do the same. We've had over 3000 visitors to the site and received hundreds of emails. Our kids are very involved with the project and even have their own page on the website with helpful tips and advice. We are presenting our project to several elementary schools in our community to get kids interested. We are listed on several other websites and blogs and have been on local TV. I think part of our success has been because we are doing this without going to extremes. Just like going on a food diet, it is better to find a system you can stick with for your entire life. We've kept it simple so that anyone can get invovled. If you want to read more about our project, please visit our website, www.thewastediet.com
