The Great Green Challenge

Here's My Great Green Idea!

Imagine driving down PCH on your way to work as the sun rises. As you drive, 18 brightly colored bicyclists slither through traffic. You wonder who they are and where they are headed. Here are the facts: They are volunteers from Catalina Island on a three week sustainable living bike tour. They are riding from San Francisco to San Diego stopping at schools, colleges, farmers markets and other local venues to educate and inspire everyone along the way. Presentations on their journeyalternative transportation, protecting the coast, gardening and compostingare shared with those they meet.

These 18 play an active role in the information they share. They have each chosen to ride bikes 800 miles as a healthy alternative to driving a car. They practice energy and water conservation by camping. Fresh produce is obtained from farmers markets along the way, supporting the local economy. Food scraps are composted rather than added to the heaps in a landfill.

Along the way there are bumps and bruises, laughter and tears, sun and rain- yet they continue riding. The impact of this journey travels much farther than the team of riders. The snaking line of neon-clad riders has even impacted you as you consider parking your car for good.
