The Great Green Challenge

Here's My Great Green Idea!

My parents have always raised me to be conscious about the environment and recycle everything that I can. More recently, we have really started to increase our efforts on reusing items that would generally be thrown away. Recycling has benefited us in so many ways such as cutting our trash load in half; reducing has helped lower our utility bills; and reusing has led to the keepsake art we have created. For our green idea, we want to take this one giant step further and educate our family, friends, coworkers, and community by starting a Recycled Crafts Club. The meetings will be held in our home where we will make crafts as we teach everyone about all the small steps they can take to make the earth a greener place. We've received wonderful tips from others already, and it's such a benefit for everyone to share their ideas. Lots of the tips we share aren't totally new, but we are all reminded of more things we can do (compact fluorescent bulbs; recycling paper, plastic, cardboard; collecting rain water; reusable grocery bags; etc.!). At the club meetings, we will make items such as vases/containers from glass or metal and decorate them with used tissue and gift paper, collage wall hangings made from items such as ticket stubs, cards, and other precious mementos, necklaces made from bottle lids, and left over ribbon and beads; the sky is truly the limit. The main purpose is to get people together and get them excited about saving our environment. In turn, they will branch out to other people they know with the ideas and enthusiasm they have acquired. We'll all be active participants in greening up our community and having dynamic art projects is the icing on the cake!
