The Great Green Challenge
Here's My Great Green Idea!
I work for a grocery store, for several years we have given customers five cents per bag they bring in to have their groceries put into. We use recycled paper bags, and now we offer a green canvas tote which we also give customers a per bag rebate when they bring them back for us to pack their groceries in. Buy offering the tote bags we are reducing the number of bags that are used every year and the majority of the people switching to the totes previously used plastic bags which is not only a pollutant but if not properly disposed of can cause harm to many different species of animals. During a trip to California we learned that plastic bags that are discarded into the ocean appear to be jellyfish, which sea turtles feed on. When they eat the plastic bags it creates problems in their digestive tracks and can even cause death. We are also reducing the amount of waste going into our landfill.
