The Great Green Challenge

Here's My Great Green Idea!

We actually have two different "green" ideas going on at the same idea at Discovery Elementary.

In January, we started a food waste recycling program in the lunchroom. Students eagerly sort what is leftover from their lunches into three different bins- garbage, recycling, and food waste. Since starting the program, we have reduced our garbage by 75%. We are currently in touch with our Parent-Teacher-Student Association for funding for smaller food waste bins for individual classrooms so that students can recycle left-overs from their snacks and any other compostable materials they use throughout the day. We are extremely proud of this program since it makes us one of the greenest schools in our school district. Our next steps are to start using compostable utensils and encourage waste-free lunches.

Our second idea is coming up in April. In honor of Earth Day 2008, the Green Team environmental club at Discovery Elementary in Sammamish is attempting to break a world record for the Guinness Book of World RecordsTM on Saturday, April 19th between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. During this eight hour period, members of the Green Team will be accepting plastic bottle donations in an attempt to collect more than 88 pounds of plastic. The purpose of this event is to communicate to Sammamish and the surrounding communities the importance and necessity of recycling plastic bottles and hopefully encourage people to switch to a reusable alternative. The students and staff at Discovery are filled with anticipation and excitement!
