The Great Green Challenge

Here's My Great Green Idea!

In order to get rid of the hazards of the CRT monitors in our school district (and save heat in the computer labs and air conditioning costs at the same time) we are in the process of replacing all CRT monitors with LCD monitors.
Research has shown that CRT monitors contain:
Bariumââ¬â¬ýwhich causes intestinal illness and muscular weakness
Beryllium -which causes cancer
Cadmiumââ¬â¬ýwhich causes kidney, liver and blood damage
Hexavalent Chromiumââ¬â¬ýwhich causes kidney, liver and nerve tissue damage
Leadââ¬â¬ýwhich causes vascular and kidney disease and brain disorders in young children
Mercuryââ¬â¬ýwhich causes kidney damage
Phosphorousââ¬â¬ýwhich causes skin, eye and stomach irritation
Brominated Flame Retardantsââ¬â¬ýwhich causes endocrine disruptor and neurotoxin

We found a website www.recyclingelectronics.com and we were able to dispose of all the monitors at no cost to the school. The following excerpt is from the website:
Prevent CRT Containing Devices From Becoming Hazardous Waste: CRT's may contain several pounds of lead, which is a toxic substance. When CRTs are broken or destroyed, such as when placed in landfills or incinerators, they release lead into the environment thus making them a hazardous material. Recycling diverts the release of lead into the environment.
Save Valuable Landfill Space: CRT containing devices such as computer monitors and televisions are bulky items. The disposal of these devices can drive up the rate at which landfills will reach their capacity.
Reduce the Need for Strip Mining: when recycled, television sets and computer monitors can be used as a source of lead as well as precious metals found in circuit boards, power supplies, and the like.
Our SaTL (Students as Technology Leaders) program helps by consolidating all collected equipment for the pickup. Students are not only helping the environment, they are helping a school budget in crisis with the monetary savings of this project.
