The Great Green Challenge
Here's My Great Green Idea!
Over the course of two years I helped my friend and his family completely transform their previously energy inefficient home into one of the highest performing energy independent homes in America. The "green" home remodeling project involved the addition of solar panels, radiant floors, installation of both bamboo and cork floors throughout the home, no-VOC paint, smart windows, energy efficient appliances, a new driveway made out of the rubble from a construction site, new landscaping that included over 30 trees and mulch made out of recycled tires, and much more. In total there were over 50 eco-friendly improvements made to the home to make it energy independent and more environmentally friendly. All of this was accomplished while maintaining the look and feel of a traditional home. After the completion of the project we created the website www.greenandsave.com to share the story of the home and to provide the rest of America with the tools and information needed to make their own homes "green". There are tips that range from "light green" to "dark green" so that everyone has an option in regards to their level of commitment.
Currently my fiance and I are beginning work on our recently purchased townhome. We began with paiting the interior with no-VOC paint, adding a programmable thermostat, installing a water filter so that we can elimate using bottled water, and adding low flow faucets. We are looking to expand our townhome by adding a composite wood deck made from recycled plastic. Then next on our list is remodeling our kitchen to include an eco-friendly countertop to support our energy efficient appliances. Together we can make a difference. We believe that everyone can and should do their part to help the environment. It was our goal to live our lives by example and help encourage our friends and family to do the same.
