Doing My Part in the Kitchen!

Here's My Great Green Idea!
I cook all of the meals for my family. As a result, I am able to turn this time into an opportunity to recycle, conserve energy, and keep our Earth (and my family) healthy with environmentally friendly foods. All of the empty spaghetti sauce jars, jelly jars or any other jars are turned into drinking cups. Plastic containers, such as the ones used for cottage cheese and butter, are used to store leftovers. The twist ties that come off of bread packaging are saved for later to tie up other bags of food. The rubber bands that hold produce together are also saved for later. I use cloth towels to dry off any produce that I wash. Any water that is boiled or food that is cooked on the stove-top gets a lid to use less heat and therefore less energy. I always buy organic products when the budget permits (and even sometimes when it doesn't; buying organic and local products is very important to me!). I have my own Aero garden in the kitchen where I grow organic herbs for cooking. All leftover scraps of lettuce, fruits, and vegetables are fed to two large desert tortoises in our backyard.
