My cousin's husband was serving in Korea and was coming home for a brief visit. She asked me to make a cake - and a flag just seemed appropriate!

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
  • *homemade or box cake mix
  • *homemade buttercream icing
  • *homemade fondant
  • **I made my own buttercream and fondant but they can easily be storebought!!)
  • *blue and red coloring
  • *star cookie cutter
  • *knife
  • *pastry bag (or ziploc bag with edge snipped)
  1. Bake cake as directed. While cake is baking, make buttercream icing and fondant (or prepare storebought). Divide icing and color. Color 1/2 blue and 1/4 red. The last 1/4 stays white. Roll fondant and cut stars using cookie cutter.

  2. Allow cake to cool. In swirling motion, use knife to place blue icing on 1/2 the cake diagonally. Using a large tip, pipe alternating red and white stripes in a wavy pattern.

  3. Place a small dab of icing on the back of the fondant stars and place on the blue icing in rows. Using blue icing, pipe message on a white stripe. I used "Welcome Home Steve" but this cake would be great for any patriotic holiday - and it was VERY easy to make.
