Thomas is my nephew's favorite character, so i had to make him a Thomas cake.

  • 4 boxes of cake mix (and ingredients on the box)
  • ready made fondant
  • buttercream icing
  • food coloring: royal blue, red, yellow, black
  • wooden dowels
  • square or rectangular cake pan
  1. Bake cakes as directed and allow to cool.

  2. Cut cake into long blocks (for example, if using the square pan, just cut in half.) Take these equal sized blocks and stack them on top of each other, each layer with icing in between. When desired height is reached (3 or 4 layers), cut a train shape into the cake - round out the front. Use wooden dowels to stabilize cake, placed vertically into the cake.

  3. Color fondant into 4 colors: royal blue, red, yellow and black. Cover the front of the cake with black fondant, cover the rest of the cake with royal blue fondant. Roll red fondant for bottom and top.

  4. Make sides of train by rolling fondant flat, cutting into desired shape and allowing to dry overnight. Also make wheels and allow to dry overnight. Make smoke stack and #1 and any other decorations and allow to dry. "Glue" these pieces on using water.

  5. Make icing in red and yellow for trim and for any words.

  6. For thomas face, make grey fondant using black food coloring. Mold face by hand and make eyes and mouth using black and white fondant. Use toothpicks to hold face on cake.
