My son was all about bugs on his third birthday so I created a hollowed out bug tree with all the creepy crawlies! He got to keep the bugs as gifts!
3 chocolate cake mixes & required ingredients.
Chocolate frosting (lots).
Leaf-shaped sugar cookies.
Multicolor frosting for the leaves.
Bugs, sprinkles, other decorations.
Black gel icing for writing and filling the hollow.
Bake the 3 chocolate cakes as directed on the boxes in three separate pans. Let cool. Prepare a foil covered board to make the cake on and get your frosting ready.
Cut the shape of a tree trunk out of the first cake and postion on your board. Hollow out the middle to create the hollow. Cut the other two cakes and scraps into tree branches and fit them onto the trunk. Make sure you cut your long branches first. Don't worry about imperfection - it all gets covered in frosting. Once you have the tree formed, first take frosting and use it to glue all the branches onto the tree.
Frost the entire cake heavily and roughly - supposed to look like bark - crumbs only add to the look! Drag your frosting knife down the tree to make bark-like texture. Add the leaf cookies on the branches, bugs all over the tree, fill the hollow with black icing, and do your writing on the trunk. Make sure you have worm shaped candles! More pictures are available.
