My son was all about bugs on his third birthday, so I created this hollowed out tree crawling with all kinds of bugs! He loved it! He kept the bugs!

  • 3 chocolate cake mixes & ingredients needed to make them.
  • chocolate frosting.
  • cug out sugar cookies to look like leaves.
  • multi color frosting for the leaves and sprinkles.
  • bugs and any other decorations you want to use.
  • Black gel icing for writing.
  1. Make all 3 cakes in separate 9x13 pans following the directions on the box. Bake, and let cool completely before removing from the pans. Get a large, foil covered board ready to make the cake on.

  2. Cut the first cake to resemble the trunk of a tree. Make a small hollow in the middle to look like the hollow of a tree. Cut the remaining cakes into branches and adjust, cut, and recut to make them fit onto the tree. Don't worry about lines or crumbs - you'll cover all with frosting. Once, the cake is assembled to your liking, frost liberally. Starting with where the branches join the tree - use the frosting to glue it together.

  3. Frost the entire tree with rough lines - it's supposed to look like bark and crumbs only enhance the look. Set the leaf cookies around the tops of the branches. Fill in the hollow with black frosting and write the message on the cake. Decorate with bugs, sprinkles, and make sure you have candles that look like worms! Enjoy!
