I made this Pirate Ship Cake for my daughter Merriweather's 6th birthday party. The kids loved it!

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
  • For the Chocolate Cake
  • 2 cups sugar
  • . 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • . 3/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
  • . 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • . 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • . 1 teaspoon salt
  • . 2 eggs
  • . 1 cup milk
  • . 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • . 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • . 1 cup boiling water
  • For the Yellow Cake:
  • 2 Duncan Hine's Classic Yellow Cake Mix
  • For the Frosting:
  • 5 large egg whites
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
  • Food Coloring
  • For the Decorations:
  • Swedish Fish
  • Life Savers
  • Root Beer Barrels
  • Graham Crackers
  • Malted Milk Bal
  1. Make the HERSHEY'S "PERFECTLY CHOCOLATE" Chocolate Cake recipe as directed on the back of the Hershey's Cocoa box. Double the recipe and use it to make 3-10" layers.
Make the Duncan Hines' Classic Yellow Cake Mix as directed on the box. Use 2 boxes to make 3 - 10" layers.
Cakes can be made ahead and frozen. Defrost on countertop before using. Cakes can also be wrapped well and left at room temperature overnight.

  2. Frosting:
Make 2 recipes of the Frosting. Tint 1/2 pink, 1/4 blue & 1/4 white.
Make 2 recipes of the Frosting and add 6 oz. of melted chocolate (cooled) to it. Mix well.

  3. On top of the cake board: stack the 3 layers of chocolate cake on top of each other. Do the same to the yellow cake. Remove a small oval section at one edge of the yellow cakes so that the yellow cakes fits up against the chocolate cake. Remove the top two layers of the chocolate & yellow cakes. Frost the first layer with pink frosting. Add the second layer and frost. Add the third layer. Carve the cake into a boat shape & angle the sides

  4. Save the pieces that you carved from the cake. Use the saved pieces to make a rail, sides & back of the boat. Attach with frosting. Frost the exterior of the cake with chocolate frosting.
Decorate cake with pink & white frosting. Use the blue frosting for the waves/water.

  5. Decorate blue waves/water with Swedish Fish. Decorate the ship with malted milk balls for cannon balls, Rootbeer barrels as the cannons or water barrels, lifesaves as portholes & a section of graham cracker as a plank. Use the birthday candles as cannons. They look great lit! Add sails that were printed out and attached to skewers. Everything on this cake is edible except for the paper sailes, skewers and the candles
