My daughter wanted a killer whale cake for her 6th birthday. This cake made one big 'splash' at her party.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
  • Cakes: One 16 inch round confetti cake, two 10 inch round chocolate cakes, two 8 inch round vanilla cakes, one 6 inch round chocolate cake
  • (these were standard cake mixes)
  • Icing: Vanilla flavored icing, vanilla icing colored blue, fondant icing
  • Rice crispy cereal and marsh mellow treats for the tail fin
  • Last ingredient: a touch of love.
  1. Step 1: bake all of the cakes, then freeze them.
After they are frozen, stack the cakes from largest to smallest.

  2. Step 2: Bake the rice crispy treats by melting butter and marsh mellows, then add a large box of crispy rice cereal to the mix. Cool slightly then mold into the tail fin shape. Place in the refrigerator to cool and harden.

  3. Step 3: Ice the stack of cakes using plain vanilla icing. Roll out black fondant and cover the stack of cakes (not the large bottom layer- that becomes the water). Roll out white fondant and cut an oval shape (like what is found on an Orca Whale) and place over a portion of the black fondant (tip- use the white shape to cover the seams of the black fondant). Cover the rice crispy tail fin with black fondant.

  4. Step 4: Insert two long wooden dowels into the stack of cakes, attach the tail fin and smooth the seams of the fondant using a smoothing tool and a touch of water.

  5. Step 5: Color vanilla icing blue and ice the bottom layer to create an effect of water. Add splashes onto the body of the whale to complete the cake.
