My 5 year old son wanted an Ocean Adventure birthday party and I came up with this cake. He loved it!

  • Any flavor store-bought cake mix.
  • 2 cans decorator icing.
  • Food coloring.
  • Ocean animal toys to decorate.
  1. Bake cake according to package directions in (2) 8 in. or 9 in. round cake pans. Cool completely before icing. Level cakes if needed, and turn over so bottom smoothest)part of the cake ends up being the top.

  2. Tint frosting any shade of blue and frost one of the rounds, as smooth as possible. This will be the bottom. Cut second round in half and place on top of already frosted round so curved edges match. Frost a blue layer on top of the half round and add the other half on top so curved edges match. Frost rest of cake in blue, as smooth as possible. The very top of cake can be made to look like the top of the ocean with waves.

  3. Using various tips for frosting and food coloring, you can add yellow sea shells, green "sea grass", pink coral and blue bubbles. Place toy ocean animals all along outside of cake, top of cake and on the "ocean floor". You can use frosting to stick the animals onto the sides of the cake. We had an octopus guarding a treasure chest on our "ocean floor" and a diver at the top getting ready to dive down and search for the treasure.
