This cake was made for my son's 9th birthday ~ a science theme! Cake is covered in fondant and painted with food coloring.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 boxes cake mix (follow directions)
  • Buttercream icing
  • Fondant:
  • 1 bag marshmallows
  • 2 pounds powdered sugar
  • 2 tablesppons water
  • 2 teaspoons flavoring
  • A bit of shortening
  • Directions for fondant ~ grease with shortening a large microwavable bowl. Add first 4 ingredients, and microwave on high in 30 second intervals until soupy. Add powdered sugar and mix until you can knead the fondant. Knead until pliable, and wrap with saran wrap until ready to use. If sticky, add more sugar. If hard, put in microwave for a few seconds until pliable.
  1. Bake one 1-layer, 9-inch cake for body and one 2-layer 8-inch for arms, legs and head.

  2. Carve head out of one 8-inch cake and arms and legs out of the other. Arrange onto a board and crumbcoat. Pipe a large amount of frosting around edge of 9-inch cake, so that there is a definite open area in the middle of the frog. (This is where you will place the organs later.)

  3. Cover with fondant, loosely at belly. Make "Y" incision at belly and peel back fondant. Make fondant organs, paint with food coloring & place accordingly. Make fondant flippers and tongue, paint with food coloring, and attach with a bit of water.
Paint entire frog with food coloring, using crumpled plastic wrap dipped in color to achieve texture.
