Chocolate explosion cake with chocolate ganache and chocolate fondant-my son's 4th birthday:)

  • 2 recipes: 1 box chocolate cake mix, 1 box chocolate instant pudding, 1 C sour cream, 1/2 C chocolate milk, 1/3 C melted butter, 1 bag chocolate chips. Ganache: 1/2 C heavy cream, 3 T butter, 7 oz chopped bittersweet or semi sweet chocolate, 2 T corn syrup. One package chocolate fondant, I think it was 5 pounds.
  1. Grease and four 4, 6" round pans and one whole sports ball pan. Mix cake ingredients at room temp in an electric mixer bowl except for chocolate chips at low speed 30 seconds, then medium speed for 2 minutes. Fold in chocolate chips. For ganache, heat cream and syrup in sauce pan over med-low heat til boiling point. Add butter, then pour on chopped chocolate. Mix well and chill til spreadable.

  2. Fill and bake pans for about 30 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cake will rise, but very flatly and will only spring back lightly. It will not test done with a toothpick. Cool 10 minutes in pan, turn out onto rack and wrap in plastic until completely cool. Stack and fill 3 round layers and one half of ball pan with ganache. Ice entirely wiht ganache after stacked. Take remaining layer of cake and half of ball pan to

  3. Cut and carve the slope on the base of Vader's helmet. Mix left over cake crumbs with ganache to form a pliable dough to make the bulging eye areas , cheeks, and mouth triangle(like sculpting the details) Cover entire cake with rolled fondant and smooth over all details. Add eyebrow details and lines on triangle with fondant rolled in a "snake" fashion. Paint with gold luster dust mixed with vodka to highlight all facial details. Add 2 dragees.
