We made this cute cake for my son's Cub Scout cake decorating contest. He won first prize!

  • 2 baked round cake layers
  • vanilla frosting
  • cornflakes
  • marshmallows
  • butter
  • green food coloring
  • pretzel sticks
  • gumdrops
  • graham crackers
  • Necco wafers
  • decorator gels or food pens
  • flaked coconut tinted green (optional)
  1. Tint most of the vanilla icing green, but leave a small amount white for the sleeping bags. Frost the 2 layers with the green icing. If you like coconut, sprinkle the whole cake with green coconut for a grassy texture.

  2. To construct the trees, first melt butter and marshmallow in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add green food coloring to marshmallow mixture. Add cornflakes until it reaches a slightly sticky consistencey (like rice krispie treats). Grease your hands and form clumps of cornflake mixture into tree shapes. Place trees on cake. You may need a little extra icing to help anchor them.

  3. To make the campfire, first make a the fire ring out of white gumdrops. Next, stack up some pretzel sticks inside the ring for firewood. Finally, cut red and orange gumdrops into smaller pieces and place in and around pretzels for flames.

  4. To make the campers, first break a graham cracker into quarters. Frost each of the quarters with the white icing and add a Necco wafer to the top of each one for a face. Use the decorator gels or pens to add face details and to decorate the sleeping bags. Place the campers around the fire for a cozy night!
