Blues Clues was the theme for our son Matthew's 3rd Birthday and I couldn't resist creating a cake that would put a smile on his face!
- RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
-
- 2 boxes of cake mix (any flavor)
- 2 tubs of vanilla frosting
- Blue/Green icing food coloring
- Fondant
- Sugar Cone
- Oven Safe Glass Bowl (for Blue's Head)
- Wilton Soccer Ball Pan (for Body)
- Lollipop Sticks
Prepare cake mix per box directions. Bake one cake in the glass bowl and the other in the Soccer Ball Pan. Allow the cakes to cool and remove from the pans. Place the cakes on the board next to each other. Use a paring knife and shape the head to resemble Blues Clues' face. Color a portion of the fondant with blue coloring and roll out. Cut circles out of the rolled fondant to create Blue's spots and two smaller circles for his eyes. Use the remaining blue fondant to create Blue's nose. With the remaining fondant, create a pink tongue. Prepare frosting; light blue, dark blue, and save a little of of the white frosting to create Blue's eyes. Strategically place the spots on Blue's body and face (cheeks on each side). Pipe a small amount of frosting beneath the fondant circles to adhere them to the cake. Starting from the top of the cake and outlining the fondant circles as a guide, use a star tip and pipe the light blue frosting till you have completely cover Blue's body. Strategically place the fondant nose/tongue to Blue's face. Starting from the bottom of the cake, use a star tip and frost the face with light blue frosting. Using white frosting, use a large round tip and pipe Blue's eyes. Use the small blue fondant circles you created earlier to form the iris of the eyes. To create the ears, use cardboard and cut out ear shapes. Adhere the fondant circle with frosting and pipe stars. Allow frosting on cardboard to harden. Place ears in appropriate location and place lollipop sticks directly behind the ears to support the ears and prevent them from moving. Finish cake by creating a tale with fondant, piping Blue's feet using a large piping tip, and decorating the sugar cone for Blue's party hat. Enjoy!
