Potty Training
gwenluvstink - June 25, 2009
I have a almost three old daughter that I've been potty traing for over a yr. and I haven't gotten around for her to start wearing big girl cotton panties. Well, I have a couple times, but I would put her pull ups back on because she doesn't tell me that she needs to go potty. She'll tell me that she needs to go after she made her accident and would think that it's funny sometimes. I really want her to be fully potty trained before her 3rd birthday and I'm planning her party about a week after and I want her to wear those panties and for me not to go back to her wearing pull ups. I want to keep a positive attitude for her, but I can't help but procrastinate.

Just yesterday, I put my daughter in her cotton panties and she was actually doing pretty good. I only put on her Pull-ups during her nap at at bedtime and she wakes up and I take her to the potty I would pull her panties or pull-up and she was dry! I was so proud of her that I gave her a big hug and a kiss telling that she is a big girl. She was so happy to hear that I think that I gave her somekind of motivation to stay dry and to reach her goal to see the new Ice Age movie. Of course each time she goes she'll either gets stickers or candy as a reward. She has been potty training for over a yr and I am so glad that she is almost completely done with her potty training and saying bye bye to pull-ups and hello to panties.

some other good techniques are:
to not allow drinks 1 hour before bedtime
take them to the potty before bed
giving her a sense of pride as a big kid is more beneficial than offering rewards. kids will start just expecting rewards for doing what they should do- it gets pretty messy and a hard habit to break be careful-lol

i want to start my 2 yr old son to use the potty but how do i stand him up or make him sit and on top of that he goes to speech therapy so he cant tell me when he needs to go

go to this site
http://www.signingtime.com/
you will see a lady standing there, under her is the number 2, click it, the boy is signing potty.

my kid was letting me know she had to go potty when she was 7 months old- it works.

you could try both and see which you prefer from standing or sitting- you might prefer the sitting though.

The key to potty training - especially when it's your first child - is that the parents have to train too. I notice that parents have the most luck when they make the commitment to really do it. This generally requires 2-3 days of staying home, setting timers, going every 30 minutes, and really devoting all of your time to the child. Don't use it as an opportunity to get caught up on household chores or tasks that you've been putting aside. Spend it as a mini-vacation with your child - playing games, help her learn to notice the cues. It really can be done but it requires a change of thinking for her AND you. :-)

this is GREAT advice. My son JUST turned two so we're still not ready yet but when we do I plan to keep him home just he and I and work through this. My daughter is 4 and still a mess wiht training and I think its because we skipped this step

From what I hear is that boys intend to be a little bit harder than girls to potty train. Usually boys won't start potty training until they are somewhere between 2 and 3. If you want your son to start standing up, have your husband be with him to help him be or get comfortable to go to the potty. He may get more of a understanding on my boys pee standing up, while girls pee sitting down. It's ok for him to sit and pee on the potty, but most males want thier sons to pee standing up since that to them it feels more natural to them.
If your son does not feel ready or have no anykind of interest, he may not be ready yet. If he is showing some signs that he may be ready such as being dry for more than two hrs, let you know what he has done in his diaper, and has the possible interest on wanting to use the potty. Although if you want your son to get more motivated, you can go to Pull-Ups.com to get more info and to get a free DVD that can give you some tips, info and some special songs and games to help him along. You can also get some books about using the potty, I usually read a book called "A potty for Me" by Karen Katz and another DVD "Elmo Potty Time." You can pick what ever you want or browse at some book stores to see what kinds of stories to help him get motivated. You can also go to Pull-Ups Potty Project to see six families experience their kids going through potty, from starting to finishing up. I hope that this helps.

My son go to speeh as well. He started off sitting to go and now stands. Dose your son make any movment/signs to let you know he knows he need to go? May he is not ready to start?

I found for my children they used the potty when they (their boby &mind) were ready. Both of my childern did us the potty occasionally at 2 but really were not ready untill late 3. Good luck :)

Oh have that DVD too. She has been watching it and watching it, and it's really motivating to her. She has an 18 mos old brother who seems to be interested about the potty as well. Right now he's at the beginning stage to where he has gone poo poo he'll tell us. I also had him sit on the potty seat a few times and was a little scared at first, but I would put him on there whenever he wants to try and have him sit there about a minute longer each time so he won't feel so afraid. Although I was told that boys are little bit harder to train than girls so they usually start between the ages of 2 or 3 yrs old.
