One thing that really helped my parents know about my social life was to be welcoming to my friends. They made our home a place that was comfortable to hang out and where my friends felt they were always welcome.

My parents kept our basement fridge stocked with soda and water bottles, and some snacks close by. We could hang out in the basement (in our OWN space!) but my parents knew we were close at hand.

Mine did the same thing, though the converted the garage into a hangout place cause there aren't really basements here. It kept us close so they knew what was going on and also gave us our space to hang out so the best of both worlds.
