Potty Training
mayela_aida - July 31, 2009
My 3 yr old daughter isn't potty trained yet. She knows when she has to go potty & she knows she one should go potty in the bathroom but when it is time to go to the bathroom she refuse to go in the toilet. I have tried rewarding her with candy, cheering for her, and entertaining her in the bathroom, and nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

There is no way to force a child to use the potty. In fact that is usually highly couter productive. Having 5 children and successfully (for the most part) potty taining all of them I find waiting till they are totally ready is the best approach. My 20 year old pulled off her diaper on her first birthday and never used one again. My 15 year old was almost 4, 5 year old 3.5, 4 year old the day he turned 4. The problem I see with trying too early is that they feel pressured and fear of having an accident. This can cause amongst other things severe constipation. When did I start potty training my children? whenthey were dry through the night for at least a month, and knew when they were going. My 2 year old is just about ready, when he has to poop he goes and hides in the bathroom. I am so excited we are almost diaper free!!

It is exciting when they start to show signs of being ready! And I think you are right waiting until they are ready can be the best and least stressful approach to potty training. Each child is different and will do it in their own time.

I just found this awesome seat cover in my One Step Ahead catalogue. Its a travel potty seat the fits over a regular toilet seat and also provides handles for your child to hang onto without touching the public toilet. And it folds up small enough to fit in your diaper bag. The hinges are pinch proof and it supports kids up to 40lbs. All this for 12.95. Im definately going to order one its like the answer to potty training on the go. Im sure theres other products like this out there but this is my first experience with all this and its the first one ive found haha. heres the link:

Also thought this potty watch was pretty neat too:

Hey there fellow frustrated mommy, i have the same problem with my 3 yr. old. she didn't start her pre-school class because they wouldn't take her un-potty trained. i am at my wits ends with my daughter. it is a bit refreshing that there are other 3yr. old's going through this as well. i am dedicating the next few wks. to staying home and working on this. she can do it, it has to be a matter of her really wanting it and not giving in to diapers when i head out somewhere. let me know your progress, what works for you.

you could tell her she is a baby and not a big kid until she uses the potty and show her your disappointment when you tell her she is a baby. kids at 3 really want to be big kids. let her make her choice if she wants to be a baby or a big kid. you could even give her baby food instead of her regular meals if she chooses to be a baby. show her what privileges big kids have.
my kid was trying to use the potty at 1 but -i- wasnt ready yet because of the public toilet situation. its all or nothing with potty training. i made her wait until her 2nd bday.

the kid has to want to do it for inner rewards not outward rewards- that is how potty training is successful.

I completely symphasize with you, my daughter will be three in February and she is doing the same thing. Some days are successful, then she goes on strike. Tried everything too, stickers, candies, cherring, promise of a potty party when she is completely trained. My two sons took until they were 3 years old to be fully potty trained. But then you hear from most people that girls are much easier, and potty train sooner..glad to hear mine is not the only one! So hang in there and keep trying, I keep rem, inding myself that you don't see any adults walking around with pull ups on, so my daughter will potty train eventually too! Wishing you all the best!

I feel your pain, my daughter was going to be 4 and didn't want to go. she also knew when she had to go and how but would refuse to go. She would go to the closet get a pull up and put it on and close the closet door. I tried everything too. I did stickers. One time when she did go I bought her something and then she never went again. We would have to make our outings short because she would hold it until she got home. It was horrible. Finally, I said you are going to sit in this potty until you go. There are no pull ups they are all gone so you will have to go eventually, even if I have to sit in here all night. It was soooo hard but she went about an hour and a half later. Finally, she started going. Now I have a boy to potty train. Good Luck to me.

hi. I did it! it was very hard time this summer and my daughter refused too .
if you stay home it will be hard, but possible to you do it during all day. sheering and rewarding do not work for every bay. talk with her about potty, put small toy box in a bathroom , let her play there...and show how to do it yourself. you may smile, but when your baby will see you on a toilet sit, perhaps she will understand what she should do.
I performed everything possible...lol I have a result: now my daughter is 29 months old and she makes everything in a potty. but, accidents still happen sometimes. she may pee in her panties or even pants(jeans ) sometimes. she ask me to turn on light in a bathroom...no more number 2, no more any diapers at day time. only bedtime :day and night sleep time I still use diapers.
if you have more advice, ask...
