Hypothetical CARS program "do-over"
FamilyHost_Annabelle - August 22, 2009
Our recent topic, CARS: The Clunker Rebate, sparked some interesting discussions about the rebate. If you could move the clock back in time and start from the planning stages, how would you change/improve the program? Let's share our thoughts here!

For one I would say they should include used vehicles! There are so many used cars out there that are in great shape and are getting 25-35 miles per gallon.

As a person still waiting for her Cash for Clunkers deal to be approved by the government (over 3 weeks of waiting for an approval at this point) there has got to be a better/easier way to do this. We've had dealers telling us that some deals got rejected and had to be redone because they wrote Clunkers on the title of the clunker in blue ink instead of black marker, when it never stated you had to write on it in a black marker.

More stringent miles per gallon increases would have been nice to see. I don't think that trading in one SUV for another SUV should qualify, it needs to be an environmentally friendly program.

They should have enough workforce to handle the claims BEFORE the program launches. There was "buzz" abounding regarding this program and it's better to start out with plenty of workers rather than playing "catch up" weeks later and having dealers drop out of the program because they have waited so long and little to no approvals and then fearin they'd not get paid by the government.

Just my 2 cents!

We have to go back in on Monday or Tuesday to get a new temporary license plate paper. We are still in limbo waiting on the official approval of our clunker deal. I thought that once the program stapped taking new submissions it would get approved pretty quickly, but that has not been the case.

Rather than using the funds to subsidize middle income families purchase of a new vehicle, I'd rather the money be spent to subsidize education and job training programs for low income people who are wanting to improve their skill set and marketability. This program has resulted in greater debt in a country where we already have over a trillion dollars of credit card debt. My do-over would be to never devote funds to this program. I'm happy for those of you who get a handful of money from the government for buying a new car, but I don't think it is money well spent. Just MHO.

Our Cash for Clunkers deal was finally approved on Wednesday! We're now officially the proud owners of a car that gets much better gas mileage.
