Halloween Costumes on a Budget
FamilyHost_Annabelle - September 02, 2009
Halloween costumes can be quite costly. What are some ways we can dress up without breaking the bank? Share your ideas here, and while you're at it, check out the articles at http://family.go.com/newsletters/dreamteam/ourbesthomemadehalloweencostumes/ and http://family.go.com/entertainment/pkg-halloween-costumes/ for some homemade costume ideas!

My MOMS Club has a costume exchange every year, where we bring the costumes our kids have outgrown or aren't using, and we sign them out to each other. Last year, I borrowed a bunny costume for free, then found a second one on Ebay for less than $10. My twins wore those, and they were so cute!

This year, I've told the kids they have to choose by Oct. 1st so we can start looking. I buy costumes at yard sales, consignment sales, etc. and ask friends with older children if they have any costumes they aren't using. We have a huge dress-up box now to work from.

There are 11 kids between myself and 2 brothers..so we try to costume switch whenever we can! It's been getting harder each year because they all wanna be the same things!

WOW, that is a beautiful gown and the necklace goes with is beautifully! She is very talented because I know lace is not the easiest material to handle!

She really does have a gift, especially when it comes to her bead work and jewelry making. I wish I had a picture of the bride's headpiece. It was beautiful!

What a deal! The nice thing about costumes is that they can be purchased inexpensively at a thrift store, then resold for almost the same price.

Sewing costumes is very economical. It's great that you can pass the costumes down! If you have any pictures of past Halloweens, we'd love to see them. :)

A real low budget costume is using a sheet to make a Ghost. :) But I'd imagine that would be a last minute, disaster kind of costume.

You could even spice up the ghost costume and make lots of holes in it like Charlie Brown. It would be cool to see how many people figure who you are :-)

I love making my kids costumes, it's cost effective and original. Last year they were a waffle and syrup. I think altogether I spent about $12 for both costumes. My niece was a high school senior, she wore her school uniform with a cane, glasses on the tip of her nose and gray streaks in her hair. This costume cost her nothing and it was great watching people try to figure out what she was!
