Halloween Costumes on a Budget
FamilyHost_Annabelle - September 02, 2009
Halloween costumes can be quite costly. What are some ways we can dress up without breaking the bank? Share your ideas here, and while you're at it, check out the articles at http://family.go.com/newsletters/dreamteam/ourbesthomemadehalloweencostumes/ and http://family.go.com/entertainment/pkg-halloween-costumes/ for some homemade costume ideas!

I used to buy them on clearance the year before and if that was not anything they would want to wear, I would sew them a costume. We have used boxes to make a cake costume and also a milkshake costume and one year we used balloons to dress my daughter up as a grape. Which was hard to walk in lol

Their are so many ideals, like you can dress your kid up like a disney character. or maybe an animal, my little girl is going as Hannah Montana, her hero

A real low budget costume is using a sheet to make a Ghost. :) But I'd imagine that would be a last minute, disaster kind of costume.

About 30 years ago my sister made clown costumes for the four of us. It cost my sister less than $10 to make all 4 of them because she used remnants of upholstery fabric material she had. Then, a friend of hers gave her a small canvas sail (yes, the kind you find on a boat) so she used fabric from the sail as the contrast fabric in the clown costume. These costumes have made the rounds from family to family for the past 29 years and have worn like iron. Now my cousins have them. If they send me a picture I'll share it here.

She is! She's a seamstress. Here's her latest project was a wedding dress for her niece who got married a few months ago. She hand sewed all the lace and bead work (she also made the necklace). I wish I had a picture of the whole gown. It's spectacular. Total cost of the gown was under $200.

WOW, that is a beautiful gown and the necklace goes with is beautifully! She is very talented because I know lace is not the easiest material to handle!
