Cut your grocery bill 1/3 what it use to be
Brooklynns-Mommy - December 03, 2008
My husband is in sales and with the economic crisis right now people are really watching there money and that unfortunately means less is spent on lawn care, my husbands business. So our grocery bill was killing us easy 100-150 a week. I cook dinner every night and I am a stay at home mom with my daughter. Recently we had some family staying with us until they could get into a place and I guess they thought it was a vacation because they did not contribute at all. I went from having 3 mouths to feed to 6 and in less then two months had spent around a thousand dollars on groceries, literally breaking my husband and me. I had to do something but I did not want to sacrifice my way of living, I am kind of a food snob, cooking is my passion. I found out that if I went online to my grocery stores website, I shop at Publix, then I could see what items were on sale and bogo. I would make my meal plans from these items and then when I had my completed list of everything I needed I went online and printed coupons for as many items as I could find. I am happy to say I now spend between 50-60 dollars a week for the same amount and quality of groceries I was spending over 100-150 dollars for. Last month I spent 200 dollars total on groceries, it has definantly lightened the load on my back. Like many stay at home moms I pride myself in being able to keep up my house, raise a wonderful child, and be as cost thrifty as possible on the necessary items needed to do the other two. Plus not many husbands, well at least mine, understand how much food is needed to keep a happy healthy household running. This new plan has definantly helped our relationship. I would be more then happy to let you know about some of the sites I go to to get coupons. One of my favorites is at juiceyjuice.com you can print a dollar off one juice, so when they are buy one get one I can buy 2 bottles of Juicy Juice for $1.59!!!!! I hope this helps especially during the holiday season :)

Having a menu and going to the grocery store with a list and coupons can save bunches of money. After a year of throwing money away we realized that we are not even eating that well and we used to easily spend 150-200$ a week. And besides that we used to eat out to so I was throwing food away.I live in Indiana and I shop at Kroger,Marsh and Target, they have double coupons up to 50 cents, I am signed up for online coupons, like Target, and our menu is made accordingly to what is on sale that week. We have been eating well and healtier. Some stores have better prices on different products, so I stuck up on things, if it doesn`t go bad then buy as much as you can when it is on sale. It is a lot of work but is so worth it because we get to spend money on travel and other things we enjoy, and oh yeah, our weekly bill went down to 70-80$ a week.

Great idea to remind everyone to use those coupons. Bettycrocker.com has monthly coupons you just print off. Just join the website and they email them to you. NO CHARGE>>>you also get their recipes. If you join Proctor and Gamble they send you samples monthly as well as coupons. Couponclippers.com sends coupons monthly. My hubby and I shop every 6 weeks at our local BJ's. We buy mostly meats. We bring the big packs home, make them into dinner portions, wrap and freeze. It's great. If you need more ideas check out the Coupon Clippers Group.
Happy Shopping everyone!

Isn't it amazing what a little change in the way you live can do to save money. I love Target, super Target is kind of a distance for me but they have amazing deals also. If you go to their website there is a link for groceries and they always have printable coupons for a ton of different items. I am glad to see that I am not the only who figured out this great way to as you said it eat healthier and save money in the process.

We use the menu plan as well when we shop. It helps with the bill, but it also helps the stress of coming home and knowing what's for dinner, not what am I going to make.

Is BJs really good on prices? We have one opening near us soon, we belong to Sam's Club but it is in Maryland with 6% sales tax, the new BJs is in DE with no tax.

We like BJs. They carry Pampers & Huggies for pretty good prices plus they accept coupons too. I think saving the 6% tax would be great! Do you have a Cosco nearby? They have great prices, but do not carry pampers...they carry Huggies.

You have to watch your local supermarket ads too. Some things at BJ's are no cheaper than the supermarket. We have found that the best prices of diapers is at Walgreen's. If you don't mind using store brand diapers. We usually pay $6.99-$7.99 for one package. The diffference is, they are ALWAYS on sale. As a matter of fact we haven't purchased diapers in over a month. They went on sale and were also buy one get one. Fortunately, it was a week my hubby got paid and we stocked up. We spent $22 and are now on week 5 of not buying diapers. I have enough for 2 more weeks! They work as well as Pampers or Huggies and at a fraction of the cost.
However, we have learned that the best prices for dinner meat and lunch meat is BJ's. We buy the big packs, make them into dinner portions and freeze them. We went 4 weeks ago and are now starting to seriously dwindle the supply. Hmmmm, maybe time to take a trip!?!
