How do you make your child happy on a budget?

How do you make sure your child has a great holiday while not blowing the family budget this holiday season.

Presentation is everything! When my kids were younger, we'd not be able to afford expensive presents, but we'd hide the present and then put clues around the house. They'd have to go on a clue hunt to get their present. One year, we wrapped their gifts up in a series or progressively larger boxes so they had the fun of doing a LOT of unwrapping. But mostly, we made sure our kids knew that we loved them.

This year we're planning a pretty good mix of new and used items. Some of the thrift stores have such great toys and books - sometimes still new in the package - at a super discount. So if you get a few of the things on the wish list that are brand new, and mix them in with "used" but still great condition items (cars, action figures, books, clothes), they really won't notice.

I usually start my Christmas in January and buy throughout the year. I have also bought from thrift store before, I just simply clean the item, restore, repaint or add decor to it and voila, a present for someone.

I did that a lot when my kids were younger. Now about the only thing we find are jeans from thrift stores but still better than nothing :)

We have always done a lot of different things in our community to make December a blast. In our city there are many places that have free activities such as an open house at the civil war era plantation. We just fill our girls up with joy so a lack of presents is not an issue. We have always done well getting them good gifts but they mostly relish in Christmas cheer and family.

I have no idea what to do for my 10 year old... she seems to only want high dollar things. I am afraid she is going to be very disappointed!

I shop throughout the year. Mostly because not only do I have to do Christmas from me and "The big guy", but about 2 1/2 weeks later, is my son's b-day. I refuse to let him be one of those kids who grows up and says "yeah, my b-day and Christmas were lumped together." That way the only thing I really have to worry about is his "Santa Wish List" item. Also, my son is only allowed to ask Santa for 3 things. And he knows that he could get any of those items and it might be one or all 3... depends on how good he was that year. Thrift stores are good too... or resale stores. We have a store in our town called Kid2Kid, not only do they sell really great quality clothes, but they also have toys. Last year we got my son a Lego table for only $65... those are normally well over $100. Also, try somewhere like Big Lots. They normally have pretty good prices. And most importantly, make sure that your kids know exactly what we are celebrating. Merry Christmas!!!!
