Gift ideas for your family

How do you shop for gifts for the family? Do you ask them for a list or do you "wing" it?

Generally I "wing it". To me part of the holiday spirit is surprising the people you buy for with gifts they like. Making a list always seemed to me like there wasn't much thought put into the gift, it's just a shopping list.

I typically give out gift cards. I get toys for the grandkids, but gift cards to my kids, who are adults. But this year, I'm going to send them orders from an outfit called "Omaha Steaks" and they'll get a mixture of steaks, chops, burgers, and cheesecake. I did that a few years ago and they raved, so I'm going to surprise them again. :)

I do a combination of both. I ask for lists and then choose some gifts for people that are not on the list so there is still that element of surprise.

I totally wing it. I like to shop on Christmas Eve. I like the pressure.

I ask and try to get some things but I have parents and inlaws that need NOTHING! For my inlaws I usually come up with a theme basket... one year it was breakfast with syrup, pancake mix, coffee, etc. They loved it. I will NOT buy a gift just for the sake of buying a gift... it must fit the person! Some years this is very trying! This year I am going to fill stockings or baskets with every day type things like lotions and gift cards!

I have made up my mind for those *hard to buy* for people on my Christmas list. I will make personalized mugs/thermos, include coffee, tea or hot chocolate in a small gift basket and add some homemade cookies.
