Elf on the Shelf?
schoolmom1852 - December 09, 2008
Has anybody had this hit their town yet? It's apparently about how Santa uses "Scout Elves" to keep track of who's naughty or nice. It comes with a story, and a little stuffed elf that you hide every night for the kids to find in the morning (after he comes back from the north pole debriefing). I got blindsided yesterday and couldn't figure out what the heck my 8 year old was talking about. Now I find out that it's sold out in all our local Hallmarks and it's like Webkinz heyday, Club Penguin, or Bakugan to find one. A mom from another school filled me in. I'm just wondering if this has been a hit outside of Central Ohio. I wouldn't normally jump on the bandwagon so fast, but apparently it's a good method for reinforcing the giving, helping and loving side of the holidays over commercialism (not that you would know it looking at the $29.95 price tag for the set).

My mom just got one for my son this Christmas. He's not too sure what's going on but thinks it's funny when it is in a different place every morning.

This is just to weird, they had a special on the local news about the elf, where the tradition started, how well it is enjoyed by children, etc. It was just funny seeing I never heard about it until you started the thread and now it is all over the news lol

That is too funny! It feels like it came out of the blue, doesn't it? Webkinz had a slower build-up, bakugan are cheaper and battle-oriented, so I could see it would be a big draw for boys, but elves? I'm so glad that so many families are enjoying it and making it part of their own traditions.

Elf on the shelf is all the rage here in our area, so we had to see what the buzz was all about. Our girls 2 & 4, were not to sure about this to start with, in fact my four-year-old was terrified of it! Thank goodness she warmed up to it and now enjoys seeing where her elf, Carmen is in the morning.

Hey, I tried to find one at Michael's in Columbus, Ohio and they didn't have one or know what I was talking about. Did it look like something that was packaged by hand at Michael's (like one of their kids craft projects) or was it by another company? I hope it wasn't something that wass just local. At least you got to enjoy it!

I could not find any at my local Michael's either but they said it was because they sold out of them quick :(

I made my own elf from a kit I got from Michael's for about $5! Much cheaper! I keep changing it's location and sometimes it will turn pictures upside down, etc.!!!

My nine year old son loves it. We named our elf Buddy and he appears in a new place each morning. It is a lot of fun for us (dad and mom) to hide him and more fun for our son to find him in the morning. That silly elf has been everywhere in the house. The one thing is - no kids can touch him or he loses his magic. It is a great time. Buddy flies home to the NOrth Pole on Christmas Eve and returns at Thanksgiving. If you can find it, I would do it. Its a hit in Northern Virginia!

I'm so glad your son likes it. Did he name him after Buddy in the movie Elf? It's one of my kids' favorites! Thanks for sharing about the no kid touching rule - that might have saved Snaps from losing (literally) his nose in my minivan!
