Elf on the Shelf?
schoolmom1852 - December 09, 2008
Has anybody had this hit their town yet? It's apparently about how Santa uses "Scout Elves" to keep track of who's naughty or nice. It comes with a story, and a little stuffed elf that you hide every night for the kids to find in the morning (after he comes back from the north pole debriefing). I got blindsided yesterday and couldn't figure out what the heck my 8 year old was talking about. Now I find out that it's sold out in all our local Hallmarks and it's like Webkinz heyday, Club Penguin, or Bakugan to find one. A mom from another school filled me in. I'm just wondering if this has been a hit outside of Central Ohio. I wouldn't normally jump on the bandwagon so fast, but apparently it's a good method for reinforcing the giving, helping and loving side of the holidays over commercialism (not that you would know it looking at the $29.95 price tag for the set).

Update Time!
We've had our elves (one for each boy) for almost a week and the boys are over it. Although, I did want to share another family with the opposite situation. One of the guys my husband works with got one for his family and has taken the "pranking" aspect of the elf to the extreme. When the kids haven't done their chores or paid enough attention to the elf, the elf gets mischevious. So far it has turned over couches, emptied a kitchen cupboard until it found chocolate, and tied the girls' dolls' legs with their feather boas, suspending them upside down from the chandelier. He's blogging it all with pictures and it's hysterical, but as my husband says it's only funny as long as children's services doesn't get called!

Oh goodness, I hope DCS will stay out of this! They need to worry about the children that truly are being abused!

We have one for our kids - ages 8, 6 and 4 - and it is the hit of our season! They are so excited to see where the elf is every morning and they even go over to it during the day to report on good deeds and make sure the elf is aware of their behavior so he goes back to tell santa! My daughter reminders her brother when he isn't listening or being kind "the elf can hear you!"

Yeah, we're doing the same thing. I even told the guys after a rough evening that we better not check the Santa Video Cam until their elves saw them doing better. Glad yours are enjoying it!

I made my own elf from a kit I got from Michael's for about $5! Much cheaper! I keep changing it's location and sometimes it will turn pictures upside down, etc.!!!
