Elf on the Shelf?
schoolmom1852 - December 09, 2008
Has anybody had this hit their town yet? It's apparently about how Santa uses "Scout Elves" to keep track of who's naughty or nice. It comes with a story, and a little stuffed elf that you hide every night for the kids to find in the morning (after he comes back from the north pole debriefing). I got blindsided yesterday and couldn't figure out what the heck my 8 year old was talking about. Now I find out that it's sold out in all our local Hallmarks and it's like Webkinz heyday, Club Penguin, or Bakugan to find one. A mom from another school filled me in. I'm just wondering if this has been a hit outside of Central Ohio. I wouldn't normally jump on the bandwagon so fast, but apparently it's a good method for reinforcing the giving, helping and loving side of the holidays over commercialism (not that you would know it looking at the $29.95 price tag for the set).

My grandmother had one of those elves for as long as I could remember. She didn't have the book or anything, but she'd perch him up in a corner or on a picture on the wall. Eventually it got to be a game to see who could find him first each December.

I just noticed the new box set thingy they have. I want to check one out in person before I get it for my mom. I think it would be a cool nostalgia thing.

Thanks for sharing! Hallmark also had some cuddlier versions of elves, but they were sold out in all but the $39 "24 version. The gift set has that vintage elf you mentioned -- but I'm not sure my kids would go for it... That's so cool that it has a family link for you. What state do you live in, if you don't mind me asking?

This is the first I have ever heard about this. I think it is a cute idea! In Germany we have a tradition on Nikolaus Day (Dec. 6th), that evening a Santa (usually a neighbor) comes and knocks on every door to ask the parents in front of their children, if they have been good or bad. I still remember how fast my heart was beating when I heard that knock and the Hohoho!

Our Elf arrived last year on Thanksgiving day (as he does every year now) He is big in our town and hard to get also.(Alabama) Elfie (the name our daughter gave him) is wonderful , she talks with him & loves getting up and dressed for school in a hurry to look for Elfie. (no more struggle to get up and the morning yeah Elfie) She sends cards, notes, and list with Efie to Santa and especially loves sending artwork she has made for Santa and Mrs. Claus. Also it seems that knowing Elfie is there watching and reporting to Santa helps to keep her room clean, toys picked up and her chore list is always up to date and complete got to love the elf. There is a web site also with some games and to register your elfs name. Trust me the search will be worth it its a great tradition to start and hand down.

This is the first I've heard of it. What a great idea. I googled it and found a Flash oriented page that can get you started if you want to know more. http://www.elfontheshelf.com/#/home

It hasn't hit here in my area that I know of , but it sure sounds like a great idea. It just so happens I do have a very old antique elf that I inherited from my mom that I've always put on our bookshelf, but I've never heard of the hiding it every night. I didn't know Hallmark had them. I'm going to investigate more and look into that web site too. Thanks for the info!
