Electronic "conveniences"
Pork-and-Beans - August 21, 2009
We've been traveling quite a bit this summer. As we were coming back from Chicago recently I looked at all of the electronic gizmos in my truck and was surprised at how many of them there were. I have a GPS, satellite radio, I-pod and DVD players either built in or plugged in. They certainly have helped to make traveling easier and more comfortable in our family, but how about yours? What do you guys have and how/why do you like them? Or do you prefer to keep it simple?

We use GPS and our daughter can't travel without her I-pod, Nintendo DS, PSP, Movies, and her cell phone. These gizmos give me piece of mind while driving, although I have to say she is a very good traveller.

My iphone has GPS and maps, my ipod and FM radio access. I keep all my DVD's at home, convert them to mp3's for my iphone. And I love it! Actually, the radio in my SUV isn't working, I haven't had it repaired because I'm a single adult and I don't need it since I have my ipod.

My wife and I both travel with our own MP3 players. And we have a portable DVD player for the kiddos in the backseat. We don't have a GPS unit yet but my wife really wants to get one.

I find it interesting that men traditionally have wanted no help in figuring out directions. They'd rather had cut off an arm than admit to their wife that they are lost and need help. Now, they gladly show off their little GPS unit and happily turn and stop and go all to the dictates of the little box. Technoloigy is changing our social values, I believe. :)

Maybe it's the female voice telling us where to go that is the difference. I find myself saying "yes dear" to my GPS. :)

For me, I just like to get the feel of a place. I enjoy looking at maps ahead of time and planning out my trip. I have a pretty good sense of direction and rarely get lost (*knock on wood*). I just don't see the need for the GPS.

I feel pretty much the same way. However, the last trip I took I came across a long line on the Interstate. I used my iphone to check alternate routes, and found some back roads that would get me home on an alternate route. I confess that I was fascinated watching "myself" moving via GPS. Like a lot our gadgets, I'm not sure how much "need" there is as much as it's fun to play with.

I think the future holds a all-in-one unit that will do it all, including communicating with a 'smart' house to turn on lights, adjust the thermostat, and check security when you aren't there. I believe that's the premise behind the iphone phenomenon, which is sweeping the country.
