Carbs
Jennyboots - September 04, 2008
I hear so much about carbs.. they are all bad, some are good... I went shopping recently and went just about crazy reading labels! I don't over do it with carbs but sometimes a sandwich is just what you need! What is your opinion?

I have recently switched the types of carbs I take in. I use whole wheat pasta, sweet potatoes in recipes instead of white potatoes (more fiber and vitamin A) and am getting ready to experiment with 7-grain breads for when I am wanting a sandwich. I heard there are some good breads out there.

One of the important things to remember about carbs is that not all carbs are bad. Your body needs carbs - they provide energy. The key is, as always, moderation (don't you get tired of that word?). You want to choose the right kind of carbs - whole grains, not processed carbs. And, ideally, pair them with a protein or fat to slow down how fast your body metabolizes them.

So if you're going to have a slice of whole wheat toast, put a little natural peanut butter on it. Have some cheese when you enjoy your apple.

You're welcome.

You may want to visit your library and check out the South Beach Diet. It's a pretty light read and even if you don't follow the diet, it does a great job of explaining the logic behind low-carb diets.

The difference between SBD and Atkins, is that South Beach recognizes there are good carbs. It doesn't forbid carbs, it just helps you pick the right ones.

I don't want to diet... just eating right and exercising should do the trick!
