Do you scrapbook? How did you get started? Did you take classes, learn from a friend or family member, or did you dive right in on your own? Share your tips and techniques with those of us (and yes, that includes me) that are scrapbook challenged.

My first reaction to this topic was that scrapbooking is a female activity. However, I recognize that I might be somewhat sexist. I just don't know any men who are involved in it. Am I a dark ages neaderathal, or would you agree?

I have yet to meet a male who scrapbooks, but I am not sure why men don't get involved in this. Men are artists the same as women and so what is the difference between creating a nice page for an album and creating a painting or collage or other work of art? I'd imagine that some of the men I know would be better scrapbookers than I will turn out to be. I am so art-challenged that you'd laugh if you saw me struggle with putting things together and wondering if they look good.

You know, I like to scrapbook, but I would have to say I am among the challenged too. I'm really good at going to the stores and buying stickers, papers, tiles, even a few ribbons, but getting around to actually making a page...forget it. Partially I just don't have the space right now to devote to just that. Also, it took me a while to get passed that, " what if I think of better layout for this picture?" stage. I did finally dive in about a year ago and managed to do one whole album for my daughter, it was the previous year of her life. I gave it to her for her birthday. Nothing very intensive, just different layers of papers, stickers, chip board pieces. I was really happy with it. She loved it. Even though I kept it simple in design, I still averaged about an hour a page. Since then I haven't done much. But I am well stocked up...and ready whenever the mood really strikes. I haven't taken any classes, but have gone to a few workshops, where you can use their tools, dye cuts, etc. I'd really like to try one of those weekend getaway things.
My kodak easy share camera and printer have really come in handy too, for this purpose.

The first one I did was last Christmas for his mom. I couldn't think of what to get her that she didn't already have so I made her 40 pages worth of pictures of her grandchildren. Going into it I thought it was going to be something easy and I would learn it quickly. Wow was I wrong. It took me the whole month of December to get it done and I was up the night before Christmas Eve all night finishing it. But the smile and amazement on her face when she opened it and saw it was well worth all the frustration and few choice words I had uttered for that whole month.

I absolutely LOVE to scrapbook. My profile picture is of me at my scrapbooking station! Yes, I am extreme! But I do other crafts there as well. I also have the advantage of the fact that three of my children have moved out and left me with empty rooms for such things!! I have not taken any classes. However, I would like to take a couple to learn a few certain techniques. I stated out by looking at scrapbooking magazines to get ideas and then adapted them to fit my taste. I have made albums of my children, one just for me, one for my husband and I one of my grandson(of course) all are works in progress. I do not like the plastic page sleeves. i use albums like the old fashioned scrapbooks, with heavy paper or linen pages and all of my pages are full of texture and make you want to touch them. The one that was the biggest hit (actually I made three) was a recipe scrapbook. I put in all the recipes for our family favorite and from our traditional holiday meals. i included a little description about where the recipe came from. Some are from great grandparents. Some include pictures. Some I just decorated in a theme to fit the dish. In the front I included a picture on one of my children cooking when they were little. I gave each of my children one of these and they all cried, even my son!!! They have even brought them back from time to time and asked me to add a certain recipe that they remember! I used cheap spiral notebooks and inexpensive decorations, but it turned out to be a priceless gift! I am including a pic, since, I have my son's to add Red Eye Gravy!

I love to Scrapbook! My niece calls me the Scrapbook Queen! I have done photo albums with captions and cropped pictures all my life. I started doing the curent level of scrapbooking back in 1995. In fact I use to be a Creative Memories Instructor. This summer when my now 21 yr old moved to his own apartment, I moved my 18yr old up out of the basement and reclaimed it for my hobby room and some toys for my 9 yr old! I now have a scrapbook haven!! Kevin and I hung slatwall, I ordered hooks and display items, and can now see my cool toys! For the last 5 yrs I had to work in my husbands clinic 70+ hrs a week, so to say I'm behind in scrapbooking is an understatement, but I do a scrapbook for each of my 4 children for each yr. I also do one for my husband and myself, and I do vacation albums - I have many WDW albums!!

Each child has a school days album, and I have a file holder box that I put things in for each child until I get it into the school scrapbook.

My husband's favorite album has to be the one I made him of the complete 8 yr construction of our homebuilt airplane! That album I gave to him on the our anniversary 10days before First Flight. It is also the album that the FAA inspector liked far better than my husbands 'technical' photo/scrapbooks. I continued the album to include the first flight pictures. It goes to airshows with him and he kept it in the clinic in his airplane exam room for patients to enjoy!

I use all acid free products which are easy to find. I prefer strap hinge albums over post bound albums. I put on the plastic page protectors over my pictures because it protects the finish of the pictures from being rubbed off.

I usually spend 10-20 mins a page and most people think my albums are fancy, however to a lot of seasoned scrapbookers, mine are very simple. I don't do a lot of brads, and metal that make the pages real thick.

I'm trying to learn how to use my digital program from Creative Memories and it can allow you to do complete pages. But something about creating a scrapbook is therapeutic. I do have to watch and make sure my dyslexia and fibro fog don't kick in on my journaling!

I taught my sons how to scrapbook, and my daughter loves it. Amelia has her own little work space in the basement so when I'm down there she can do whatever craft she wants to do.

Nothing brings me greater joy than to have the kids grab an album and start going thru it and remembering good times. Also, I remember things by the pictures I take. My husband asked me the other day how old our carpet was. I thought then said, it is almost 12 yrs old. He didn't believe me, so I whipped out AMelia's baby album, I remembered taking her picture while she was learning to sit up as a baby on the new carpet. Kevin was amazed that I could pull out an album and have proof within minutes!

My son had to make a time line for social studies. HIs homework was to get 1 or 2 details for every year since he had been born. I pulled out his albums, we looked thru them and gave him choices to what he felt was important to him. We wrote them down, then at school he made his timeline and the student teacher gave him a 98!!

My friends know that I will usually have my camera with me. I've done the PTA scrapbook in the past and won the blue ribbon. I just feel it is important to preserve our present because in the future it is going to be our children's and grandchildren's past.

I now use digital cameras. I have 3 Kodak Easy Share cameras. I've been using Snapfish since 2000. I upload all my pictures and Videos to Snapfish. Uploading pictures is free of charge. I can then edit, crop, enhance, add borders, and then share them across the country by e-mail. This is my ultimate backup for my photos. I prepay for prints, and I get my prints for $.08. I order them online and they arrive in my mailbox in about 5 days. IF I need them right away and want to pay more, I cn pick them up at the local drugstore. I can make photo books at Snapfish, and many other neat gifts.

I would love to be able to start a swap of some kind on supplies. I have tons of stickers and things from kits that I have purchased from QVC that I'll never use. If I can give any hints or help, I'll be glad to!

And yes, Broncosdad, men do scrapbook! Creating Keepsakes did an article on that some years back!
Have a great weekend!

I guess maybe I just need to dive right in like you did. I get stuck on the whole perfectionist part of laying it out. I think that I will start with a soccer scrapbook for my youngest son. I have some soccer papers, sayings and some paper that has his school's team name and colors on it. Did you think the workshops were worthwhile? They have these pretty often at the local craft store.

I love that you uploaded a picture of your scrapbook for us to see. The idea of a recipe scrapbook really appeals to me. I am the keeper of the handed down family recipes and have wanted to do something special with them. I'd love to see more pages from yours if that's okay.
