How often do you take family portraits? Do you coordinate how you dress, such as all in the same color, etc.? Do you prefer indoors or outdoors for your family portraits? Share your stories and tips for making the family photo sparkle.

This Christmas we're going to get a professional portrait done...and we're all going to be wearing our jersey's, mostly Denver Bronco's jerseys, although my daughter and son in law are dolphin fans.

The first year we moved to Minnesota I had pictures taken of my kids all wearing Minnesota Vikings apparel. It turned out cute and was a fun way to mark our move to the northern tundra we like to call home.

We haven't done an official family portrait, like a photographer, yet. With digital cameras we've found enough success choosing a nice location as a background and just getting the picture taken. We can get them in whatever sizes and it's a whole lot cheaper than a professional photographer.

One of our favorite places to do it is on the beach close to sundown. We can get a beautiful rosy glow and the water looks so tranquil.

Do you have a friend or family member take the photo for you or do you use the timer and jump into the photos?

I bet that picture was cute, neat idea! I have always been more of a fan of the 'non traditional' family photos myself. The un-posed/less stuffy photos seem to show my family's personality the best so they mean more to me.

Speaking of MN and the Vikings. I am a Minnesotan as well. Tough year for Vikings fans so far this year...

It did turn out really cute and was fun to do.

It's nice to meet a fellow Minnesotan. Yes, it has not been a good start for he Vikings and now they are changing starting quarterbacks. It'll be interesting to see how they do against the Panthers.

I have always preferred candid shots to posed shots. I have gotten some of the best expressions and caught some of the sweetest moments that way. Seems to reflect the person more than a posed shot. However, we do get the group together from time to time to mark an occasion . This one is from last Halloween. AND I could sure use tips for taking good night pix. I used the cameras automatic "night" setting, but all of the pix came out a little blurry. Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

My husband (amateur photographer that he is) says the "night" setting slows down the shutter speed and so it'll make any movement more pronounced, from the people in the shot to the person holding the camera. He suggests trying a tripod for more stability. He is also asking if you took the picture with a digital camera or one with film. If it's a film camera, faster speed film will, on the "night" setting, make the shutter speed faster.

Thank you for the input! It is a digital camera. Canon Power Shot A540 to be exact. This camera will do so much more than I understand. i guess I should take a photography class sometime. The tripod idea might work, I have always had shaky hands. The more I need them to be steady, the more they shake!! LOL!! I'll take some test shots before the actual event and practice. Any more advice is VERY welcome.
