Removing the Bark
FamilyHost_Tom - February 26, 2009
All of us have undoubtedly experienced being awoken by our dog or a neighbor's dog barking in the middle of the night. At times this can be a chronic problem. Technologoy has developed devices which are sensitive to the sound of barking. In response to a bark, the device emits a high frequency sonic wave that is uncomfortable to the dog. With repeated usage, the dog learns that the uncomfortable sound is eliminated when the dog stops barking. Do you think this is a humane way to deal with the problem? Do you think it is OK to use such devices on neighbor's dogs?

I did a little research. Here is a link to a company that sells those kinds of units. http://www.ultimatebarkcontrol.com/?gclid=COrS7t2h-pgCFQGbnAodH0HNlg Are they humane? Well, we hit our dogs with rolled up newspapers to train them, I guess that is no less humane. Is it ethical to do that to neighborhood dogs? YES!

His parents use one on their dog but he is smarter than that. See they take it off when he stops for a while and that is when he starts again. When they put it back on he stops cause he knows what is coming. I am sure it would work better if they left it on longer but they don't. As for using it on my neighbors dog, well they have this yappy little thing that barks at the wind at all hours.....I think it would be more humane than me using a paint gun on it.

The more I think about this, the more I think its a great device. But it needs to be used consistently until the dog learns. After the dog learns, you wouldn't even need the device. There is nothing that is worse than a neighbors dog that barks for hours on end in the middle of the night.

My neighbors are moving and taking the yappy dog with them. I have never really been happy to see someone move like I am right now. Their dog seriously barked everyday all day!

I hope your next neighbors won't have a barking dog. That really can make life miserable. If I ever encounter that again, I plan to purchase one of those bark stoppers.

Some people have had their dog's vocal cords cut. I've seen several dogs like that. They look like they are barking but nothing comes out except a very tiny sound of air. that just doesn't sound right to me.

We have one of those devices for our ferocious little Cairn Terrier. It's not a collar, it's a box that you place in the room/yard that he is in and when he barks the sound goes off. We make sure that is always around and on. It works great! He's figured out that the barking sets it off so he just makes a low grumbling sound when he wants to bark. It's funny, he sounds like a cranky old man. The surgery is just mean, I'm sorry but there are other ways to teach your dog..... although I think there are some people that might need it - LOL

OMG that is horrible! What kind of person would do that?? That seems way too drastic to me.

I read a novel once in which a compound was patrolled by German Shepherds who were fixed like that because they didn't want to dogs to give notice that they were attacking! I agree that it's barbaric.
