Riding ATV's
FamilyHost_Tom - December 01, 2008
ATV's (All-Terrain Vehicles) including dirt bikes and three or four wheelers are very popular. Do you have an ATV? Have you ever been on one? Some states require licenses and have age requirements. What are your experiences with ATV's?

Ohhh, I dislike those with a passion! My son had an accident on a four wheeler and we almost lost him because of it. I think they should only be allowed for those 18 and up, require a license, and that you have to wear a full helmet and pads. I am not sure why they have not passed a law here yet but have passed a law that requires a license for jet skies and dirt bikes. To me they are all the same!

Those who ride them are very enthusiastic. But I am a bit hesitant, too. Dirtbikes are better. I've read that when a fourwheeler overturns it can pin people or do some severe damage. Perhaps there are accidents because people aren't used to riding on them. They tip over so much more easily compared with a car or go cart.

ATV's are a blast! Like anything else, you need to exercise prudence, but if you don't barrell full bore over hills without knowing the terrain, you can mess yourself up. But properly supervised, they are really a lot of fun. Helmets are a must, and prudence demands pads for elbows and knees.

I totally agree, children need to be supervised at all times when using an ATV! I also think that 16-18 would be a great age to for ATV users!

The problem with setting an age is that some ATV's are marketed for younger children, they are small and are usually much more stable because of their size. But adult supervision is certainly a no brainer.

Smaller and more stable, perhaps, but I still think the potential for severe injury is there, and having an 8 year old on a motorized vehicle is, IMHO, not wise. I'd think that prudence would demand an age limit of ten at least.

Maybe I am just scared but my neighbors grandson was 9 when he was on a smaller ATV, with grandparents right there watching and he still hit a bump, flew over the handlebar and broke his right arm :(

Ok then, I think we have a consensus. No children under the age of ten are allowed on ATV's! Now, we need to figure out how we're going to enforce this new rule! LOL!

Everyone in my family including myself has been riding/racing ATV's and dirtbikes since about age 3. It is a very enjoyable and safe sport if practied with supervision and skill. Experience and training are the keys to safe riding. My 7 year old son loves to go riding/racing and has his own ATV. I am a firm believer that age appropriate equipment and full riding gear is very important. With practicing these rules ATV and Dirt bike riding is a great way for your family to spend time together and see the outdoors. Age is not the issue.
