Polar Bear Club

In many parts of the country, people join together to be part of the "polar bear club." These are groups of people who intentionally jump or wade into ice cold water. Some do it for the shock factor, some because they think it's healthy, and some do it for other reasons. During my trip to South Dakota last weekend, my friend Marvin, who is a minister, baptized two men who wanted to be baptized in the lake at a campground up in the mountains. To do so, the ice had to be broken, and it was definitely cold. All survived the experience, I'm glad to report. Have you ever been part of a polar bear club, or gone into freezing, ice cold water intentionally7?

When I was barely out of my teen years, I went to a club in Iowa that had a cold plunge. It was next to the hot tub, and was big enough for one person to jump or climb in. That's absolutely insane, though I did it. I can't imagine deliberately wading into that lake. Though he had on bibs, you KNOW that had to be cold. Heck, there is ICE floating around. Yeah, you got to be nuts to do that.

i cant stand to go in a non heated pool never mind think about something that is covered with ice..ugh..not for me for sure!

I would think that doing something like that would require an adventuresome spirit beyond what I have the capacity for. I'd jump in if it were to try to save someone, but for the fun of it? Not my cup of tea! he he he

I would think that the most important factor to consider is your health. If you have high BP or any heart problems, this would be something to avoid. The shock of the temp change to your body is pretty profound.
