Exercise Equipment and Motivation
Shelstory - October 26, 2009
Hi All! I am new to this group, and I have a new treadmill being delivered tomorrow. It's not my first. If I'm honest, I will admit that I am an exercise machine collector and give away-er, meaning I buy it, use it rarely and give it away. Why should this time be different? I am hoping the iPod docking and workouts courtesy of Jillian on "Biggest Loser" will convince me to stick with it, but new bells and whistles become old features after a month or so.

I'd love to have others share their tips for keeping their equipment dust-free. Do you watch TV while you use the machine? Does a certain time of day work? What's your secret? I really want this time to be different.

I really want an elliptical ... that way I can have it here and use it every day. I think I would use it on all the days I don't have time to go out and run. Maybe Santa will get me one!

I wanted an elliptical too, but hubby is a treadmill kinda guy, so we went with that. It arrived yesterday. We took an hour last night to put it together, and then it was time to get the kiddos to bed, so I didn't get a chance to use it yesterday. Hopefully today! On principle I have to use it the first day I can right? How lame would that be to have a brand new treadmill sitting in the family room unused. Oh man, this isn't looking too good ...

It doesn't really matter if you have DVD's, treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, or bowflex. The key to weight loss is to be consistent in your eating habits and exercise habits. The truth is that we don't need the machines, tapes, DVD's and other stuff. We could walk and get the same exercise, or if its raining, just do some exercises that can be found online. The key is simply doing it. Nike was right: Just Do It! If we don't, having great machines just means we have something else that needs to be cleaned and which takes up space. :)

Absoultely agree! I guess the great question I am always pondering is why do some people just do it, while others sit and think about doing it? I know I should do it. I think about doing it. Occasionally I actually do it, but turning it into consistancy is where I really lack the motivation. :)

Sometimes it requires some kind of "crises" event such as children making comments about your size, or seeing a picture of yourself. Possibly just getting angry or upset enough...that can fuel your determination. Another strategy is to find a "partner" that you can be accountable to.
