Swine Flu in Schools
FamilyHost_Meredith - September 14, 2009
The CDC is doing weekly releases on how the Swine Flu (H1N1) is progressing in states around the country. In all of the back-to-school information, what did the school systems announce in terms of swine flu? Are they taking any special precautions? Is there new information that you were unaware of? What, if any, concerns do you have sending your child back to school?

Let us know what you think. And here's a link to the CDC's H1N1 updates:

The school where my mom volunteers is really stepping up their sanitation protocols. No one has broken out in H1N1 in the town yet, but they're preparing for the worst. They have hand sanitizer at every entrance and exit, antibacterial hand wipes everywhere, and they have a groups of volunteer parents in place to make sure they continually wipe down door handles, telephones, cabinet knobs, and so forth.

At our preschool, we've instituted a more stringent honor system for our parents. We had always asked that parents take their children to the restroom before entering the classroom. It helps us with potty accidents but also gave them a chance to wash hands one last time. But this year, we're having teachers stand at the classroom door and maintain a checklist. We specifically ask parents if they have taken their children to wash their hands. We aren't yet at the point of standing in the restroom and watch, but at least it keeps in front and center in the parents' heads that we are trying to address this issue.

I have noticed more and more stores also keeping hand sanitizer by the doors and the cash registers to encourage people to prevent the spread of germs.

How have the parents responded to this plan?

The first wave of absences due to the Swine Flu/H1N1 has passed and it hit the schools pretty hard. I imagine that this is not the last we have seen of it for the season. The school district here is offering free vaccinations in a few weeks and so far about 20% of the kids have been signed up for it by their parents.

The schools here have lots of hand gel and are keeping track of all sick kids. Both my kids also had the H1N1 vaccine at school too!

The increased vigilance will help, but wherever you have a group of children, the risk factor is elevated. I think I'd do everything I could to ensure that my child we as physically prepared as possible, with good rest, healthy meals, and the constant emphasis placed upon washing hands before meals and after using the restroom. Those things should help your child's immune system if they are exposed to the virus.
