Holiday Stress
FamilyHost_Pia - 2 weeks ago
The holidays are approaching fast and while I am mostly looking forward to them, I also dread them to a point! The planning, preparation, shopping, etc., usually wears me down and my stress levels go way up! I try to tell myself every year that not everything has to be perfect but that is easier said than done! How do you prepare for the holidays and keep the stress to a minimum?

I'm pretty good at delegating. I start off the holiday season by making a list (and checking it twice) and deciding what I want to do, what I want to pass to someone else and what doesn't really need to be done at all. Then I do the stuff on my list, and I'm done. I usually do gift shopping because I like it and Paul does the cooking because everything he makes is edible.

Delegating is a great option but, if you're like me, you want to do it all yourself all the time. So it's really about having minor goals. You have to pace yourself and know that you just can't get it all done in one day. So I generally make up a schedule for November and December and plug in goals for each day. What day will I spend two hours wrapping presents? What day will I work on the Christmas cards? What day will I spend baking cookies? It's helpful for me to see it all laid out and, frankly, helpful for my family to know what to expect from Mom.

Oh, I am so glad I am not the only one that thinks she has to do it all herself! I am getting better though! I now ask for help when I need/want it and try not to be too perfect about everything!

I have tried to give up some of the work that comes with planning a get-together but I am always afraid that they cannot do as good of a job as I can (which I know is not true, they just do it differently)! So, I will be stressed up until the last minute but then also proud that everything came together. Maybe one day I will learn to 'share' the work!
