Carbohydrates
FamilyHost_Pia - September 06, 2009
Carbohydrates aren't all good or all bad. Some carbs promote health while others may increase the risk for certain health issues. I try to stick to fresh fruits and veggies but I do also want the occasional chocolate chip cookie :x
Do I really need to cut out all the carbs? What do you do?

What I do is to try for the most part to have my carbs be more whole grain. I have been eating bread, but it is whole grain bread and brown rice instead of white rice. If only I could get rid of my love of chocolate.

I'm new here so I thought I'd dive in. My husband and I are very health conscious and try to eat healthy most of the time (yes, we indulge occasionally). We teach our children to eat well, even at their young age. The carbs we add to the diet are complex such as oatmeal, beans, whole wheat breads. My kids don't even know what white bread is - they think bread is supposed to be brown. On the weekends, we have pizza but always with a whole wheat crust, fresh vegetables and low-fat cheese. They eat the same things their friends do, just a little healthier choice. (They eat cereal too with low fat milk but I buy Kashi honey puffs that are high protein, fiber and low sugar).

It has been the same for me, even though for some reason I cannot get used to brown rice :(

Oatmeal, beans and wheat bread are items that I include in my eating regimen. Other than those items, I don't eat many carbs. Of course, low carb is good, but trying to find food that is low carb, low fat, and low sodium is kind of difficult. There are only so many ways to prepare celery! :)

Well Hello group, Now you know my pain.... :( I have been a chef for many many years,,, could prepare everything and eat anything... Now in the last year, it all changed over night. I got really sick to almost the point of no return. I felt poisoned and extreme pain all over, doctors could not figure it out. Then I went to a Homopathic Doctor, and they new right away... I had become severly allergic to Wheat, Barley, Oats, Corn, Rye, and all the carbs you love. If that was not bad enough, I was also allergic to the dairy/casin family, so I changed to Soy & Goat... and they did not agree eiather, Now I am on rice for everything.... I guess the Lord needed to expand me in my culinary skills... Now every thing is much harder yes, but with exploring with different foods I was not a customed to, it is getting easier.
So, yes even whole wheat can create problems for folks at any time in there life. I still make some things my family has always loved, but I know when I par take, I always suffer for it. So, if these carbs are making you not feel so good after you eat them, you might want to get tested for Gluten intolerence... I have not figured out why, this happened after 53 years of being able to eat anything.... Does any one know the answer to this?

We hate to admit it and rarely talk about it, but like everything else, the body wears out. One reason is that the body replicates every cell in the body once every 7 years. That means if you're 70 years old, you've "had" ten bodies, and as a xerox machine makes copies of a copy and it gradually becomes distorted, so do our cells. It's called aging, and its not fun. But it is universal. I used to look at people in their 50's and older and think to myself, "That won't happen to me, I'm not going to slow down." How arrogant we are in our 20's! Its not so much the lack of energy, its the pain that accumulates everywhere and grows over the years. OK, enough of my diatribe on aging. :)
