It sort of depends what mood I'm in for the year. This past Halloween we did some cute ones - a ghost, a Scooby Doo, and then just "Boo"

We usually draw a big smiley face and carve that out. This year I might pick up one of the ideas here and try it!

I found cool stencils one year... they worked GREAT! I am going to look for those again this year.

Those are great, is there a trick to getting them so perfect?

Actually, yes. I do an internet search for Jack-o-Lantern patterns. There are lots of websites with free patterns that you can print out on your home printer.

Attach it to the pumpkin with a pin and then use another pin to trace holes along the pattern. After you've traced it all, remove the paper and use a knife to carve along the perforations.

Your pumpkins will come out great, and there's no evidence that you used a pattern! ;-)

The past few years we have used both free and not free patterns from the net. The results have been awesome. The Trick-or-Treaters all comment on or wonderful Jack-O-Lanterns.

We found that more than 1 candle really helps light up the pumpkin!

Thanks for the tip to add more than one candle to a carved pumpkin. I will try that this time around. I like the photo you uploaded of your carvings.
