Dishwashers
FamilyHost_Kristina - August 22, 2009
According to the BBC dishwashers can reduce water consumption by 80% compared to hand washing.
If you wait and only run during full loads this will also help with saving water. Pre-rinsing dishes sometimes is necessary to get off the stuck on food but it can waste up to 20 more gallons of water per load. And turn off the dry mode and let the dishes air dry in the dish wracks or towel dry will save more energy as well.

Do you hand wash and air dry or are you using you dish washer more? Which do you find more convenient or more effective at cleaning the dishes? Is your dishwasher an Energy Star appliance?

I love having a dishwasher! I have always run it on the shortest cycle that will get the dishes clean and always air dry rather than heat dry. Other than goopy eggs, my dishwasher will take off most anything without having to hand rinse the dish prior to loading the dishwasher.

I try to wait until the dishwasher is full before running it, but sometimes I just don't have enough glasses for the top shelf or plates for the bottom shelf and so I then put a pot or two into the dishwasher to fill it (and not have to wash the pot) and then Ido not feel guilty about running it without it being full.

I cannot imagine how much time it saves me on any given day to use the dishwasher rather than wash and dry all the dishes by hand. It only takes me a matter of 5 minutes to unload and put the dishes away from the dishwasher.

We have an Energy Star dishwasher that we purchased a few years ago. We definitely save up until we have a full load of dishes and try to run it at night when it won't heat up our house in the middle of the day. We do use the air dry feature, too. My brother has a small apartment that doesn't have a dishwasher and I can't imagine the cost of having to handwash the dishes - both financially and to the peace of mind.

Yeah sometimes it isn't an option to run it a hundred percent full but good for you trying to make sure each time it is!

The air dry feature is awesome! And I can't imagine not having a dishwasher and having to wash by hand still. All that water that is wasted with filling the sink and rinsing them off.

I've completely reduced the energy demands. My dishwasher probably uses more water though, but everything is air-dried. But my dishwasher is lazy and would rather watch the Broncos play. But sometimes I can kick the old thing into gear! :)

Yes, we have. And I think they do just as good a job as the regular more chemical-y ones.
